Lance Kurland
Biography
I was born in upstate New York over half a century ago and have travelled throughout the United States. I have lived in Boston where I met my wife, San Francisco, Boulder, and currently live outside Asheville, NC.
I have helped organize a labor union, ran for the North Carolina State House in 2000, and am musical director for the yearly Organicfest celebration now in it's 10TH year held in Asheville. This year it will be held on 9/10/11 in the new Pack Square Park from 9-10PM. I have studied the healing arts as well as offered consultations employing Flower Essences, breath work, Reiki, and TAE method I have developed over the years. I have taught self awareness classes throughout the country as well as Flower Essences, Reiki, TAEH, and song writing.
My music reflects my understanding and sometimes playful nature. The songs are political, spiritual, personal, and sometimes simply reflect the world we live in. I have written songs for Wolf Haven, a Motorcycle Club, entertainment hall, a radio station, a radio show, the SEEE Expo, Rolling Thunder, and a TV show. With over 125 songs, they run the gambit from a red neck being abducted by aliens, a woman's past lives, friends losing their homes in the recent economic turndown, what is made from petroleum in our everyday life, and love songs. I wish I could tell you what my signature song is, you know the break out song everyone remembers you for, but I can't. It seems everyone likes different songs. A healer friend of mine and Kerry Boker, who did such a great job with the graphics on the 2 CD's, both like "I Am" as their favorite, from the Everyday Heroes CD. The folks at the Guitar Trader like Dino-Sore. Paul Quick, my partner in rhyme who co-wrote songs with me, really likes "American Scene". Scott St. Dennis, who recorded and plays on most of songs on the CD's, likes "Wonders". My wife Ruth likes "Your Loving Arms", probably because it is about her. Maybe I have yet to write that signature song, .
You will notice that most of the songs on the "Seasons of the Soul" CD are co-written. Usually I write the lyrics and Paul writes the music. One of my favorite songs, "The Reign of Man", has lyrics written by my brother Miles Kurland, and "A Perfect Song" has lyrics by Alicia Knighten. I can play on both sides of the songwriting fence. When putting together the CD's, we recorded 14 songs, and 7 are common to both CD's. Each has 4 songs unique with the HighLight CD being more rock/ folk oriented, and my solo CD, "Everyday Heroes", being the more acoustic sounding, with only "American Scene" having the rock sound.
I have never consciously written for the pop charts or radio, it's just not where my head's at. It is music written more from the heart than following a formula. I hope you enjoy the music and drop me a line to let me know what moves you. I hope it's clear, this music was written for you!
