Seasons of the Soul

HighLight

                            Seasons of the Soul

Paul Quick and I started getting together about a decade ago and started writing songs and making music together. I called us HighLight because of the informational and inspirational nature of the music. We were joined by Alicia Knighten who sang and started writing songs with us. Paul plays as well with a rock group called “Back Pages”. They play covers of the 60’s and 70’s songs locally in the Asheville, NC area. When Paul and I wrote a song I wanted recorded for the TV series "Stargate Universe", Scott St. Dennis and Mike Mahaffey from the Back Pages joined us in what ended up in the end as 14 songs. Eleven of the 14 are here with the other songs on my Everyday Heroes solo CD. Scotts' St. Dennis Productions was invaluable in putting the project together.

Lance Kurland- guitars, lead and back up vocals

Alicia Knighten- back up vocals

Mike Mahaffey- drums, bells and percussion

Paul Quick- Guitar guru, lead and back up vocals

Scott St. Dennis- Guitars, percussion, vocals, bass, synthesizers, bells, whistles, and everything else…

Here are a few insights that could enhance your appreciation of the music:

Timeless

“ We have met before, in a time before the wind,

When you sought a friend, we have met before.

I am the Timeless One, I dwell in the Halls of Forever… Forever.”

My beating heart embraces the Mystery. I am the Timeless One… The Timeless One.”

Paul wrote the music to this song matching my lyrics perfectly. Based on my study with The Ram over many years, it reflects our potential and destiny. “Walk the Holy path, each step an answer true, each thought defining you…” Paul sings lead, the rest of us do Owwing and Ahhhing! A live version with me singing is on the main page in the bottom link.

One More

“If kisses were wishes I’d give them to you,

I think of your feelings in all that I do, hours spent together are too few.

One more hour with you, one more day too few, one more week too long… you’re gone.”

This is a song about my life and my wife Ruth. She is has been care taking my in-laws for the last 3 years in South Carolina while I am living and working mostly in North Carolina. When recording we would usually record us playing  the song, Mike would then lay down the drum track, and we would come back and lay down guitar and vocal tracks again, not here. This is my most recent song, and Scott set up 2 mics one for vocal, one for the guitar, and we did it in one take. Scott then filled in everything else.

Joanne

“Joanne can make flowers grow from paint and lines,

Draws the afternoon away losing track of time,

Forgetting to make dinner, it’s a small price to pay,

To come home tired and sore and have Joanne make your day

Her smile is sunshine sweet, her voice is windy soft,

No matter how down I feel, she sends my heart aloft,

I have to pinch myself each time I see my girl, I’m the luckiest guy in the world.”

Paul did the music and lead vocal, great phrasing. Often considered our most popular sounding song. I wrote lyrics imagining what it would be like to have children, I have none but Paul has three. I think there are only three cords in the entire song. Songs I write music to have 5-8 different cords, just to get them done. The simplicity adds to the strong melodic character of the song. A great song to learn guitar to.

My “Everyday Heroes” CD has 7 songs in common with each CD having 4 unique songs. This CD is more rock oriented, “EH” is more acoustic.
